We have spent alot of time this week with our distributor from Norway, he had never been to Oxford so enjoyed seeing this beautiful city as well as talking about OrganiPets. The judging panel found OrganiPets to be the most innovative nominee, producing environmentally friendly pet food and embracing sustainable practices throughout the business. The company will receive one year’s free office accommodation at MEPC Milton Park and mentoring from the prestigious Warwick Business School, an award worth an estimated £15,000.

OrganiPets was set up in 2007, when founders John Rice and Liz Nuttall were unable to find high quality organic food for their terminally ill dog, Raffy. When their home-produced organic pet food was linked to the improvement of Raffy’s health, they decided to make the food commercially available.

Alongside the owners’ passion for natural pet food, OrganiPets is committed to growing the business, avoiding excess packaging, recycling wherever possible and supporting local farmers.

The Greenshoots Award was open to any business under three years old with a strong environmental connection. The standard of entries was exceptional, proving Oxfordshire as a hot bed for environmentally-minded entrepreneurs.

Entries were analysed by panel of judges including Professor Roger Mumby-Croft of Warwick Business School and Andrew Smith, business editor of the Oxford Times.

Cold Wet Nose

We met with Beverley yesterday, she is the editor of Dogs Today which is the biggest monthly Dog magazine in the UK. The meeting was very enjoyable as Beverely brought her son and we brought Raffy, we all chatted hapily while tucking into the most amazing chinese food!

The upshot of the meeting is that OrganiPets is going to launch a very exciting competition at the Cold Wet Nose Show which is on the 12 July, we will tell you more in the weeks to come, but its going to be huge and all you dogs out there who make your 2 legged friends life a little bit better keep reading as this will be for you!

Thanks all the kind offers of support for the West Oxford Animal Rescue, its really good to know there are so many kind people out there, however although you offered lots of support we still need for a kindly printer to come forward to help Julie. If you know of anyone who might be happy to help please let us know.

This coming weekend will be s short one for us as we are going on holiday, however dont worry most of the team will still be here so your orders will still be processed, but the blog will take a little holiday, back on the 30 June.

Can you help our Charity???

One of the charities we support is West Oxford Animal Rescue, we give them all the food they need for all the cats and dogs they look after. This has meant that they have been able to focus their funds on some of their more 'special' animals who are in need of veterinary attention. Gabby and Ticky for example are kittens, they arrived at the rescue after falling from a balcony and were in a terrible state. Gabby seemed to have ruptured one eye and Ticky wasnt responding to anything so was thought he had suffered brain damage. After surgery Gabby regained sight in both eyes and tests showed that Ticky was at least 80% deaf which was why he wasnt responding. With the fantastic help of all the volunteers he is learning to cope with his disability and is learning to trust humans again. However the Rescues vets bills are never ending and the more money they can raise the more veterinary care thye can afford. We have been speaking to Julie who runs the rescue about otherways to rasie money and Julie would like to design and sell Christmas cards and calendars from November. We have tried to find printers and designers who can help Julie but we are struggling, is there anyone out there who can help this rescue, it would make such a difference??? Raffy was very pleased with herself as she appeared in a 3 page article in the Independents Saturday magazine last week, she is still going through all your emails asking about whats it like being the CEO of an organic petfood company surrounded by food! However right now shes taking a nap under my desk obviously building up her strenght for her walk at lunchtime!

New venture with Paw Pals

We are very excited here as we have just started a new venture with Paw Pals, www.paw-pals.co.uk. Paw Pals are an ethical pet sitter and dog walking company based in Swindon but they have franchises through out the UK and they are expanding fast into other countries.

Victoria heads up Paw Pals she gave up her high level job in PR to set up Paw Pals and its gone from strenght to strenght. The difference between Paw Pals and other pet sitting companies is the extra level of care they take and the ethical approach they have to their business. It became clear very quickly that OrganiPets and Paw Pals made natural partners and the rest is history.

So let us know if you see the Paw Pals cars driving in your area as they will have the OrganiPets logos on then now!

Raffy is off to another photo shoot this Sunday as we are about to announce a further joint venture with other like minded companies, we will be able to tell you more about this in July! Raffy loves having her photo taken, however this one might be a bit tricky as there will be lots of cats there and although Raffy loves cats we not sure how she will react to lots of them, we will let you know how it goes!

Summers arrived?

This has been a busy week for Raffy. She appeared on Radio Solent yesterday for a prime time 30 min slot all about pet food. John spoke on Raffys behalf but all the production team were smitten with her and wanted to take her home with them! There were alot of callers ringing in saying that even in these difficult economic times they still wanted to give their pets good honest food like OrganiPets. One caller rang to say that perhaps organic pet food was a step too far, however John explained that what was important in pet food was that it was made from good quality ingredients that benefit pets ( not low grade meat or bulking agents such as wheat and soya) and that there should be no artifical preservatives, flavours or colours added. As we use organic ingredients these by definition will not have such nasties in them, additionally us as pet owners have the peace of mind knowing that the chickens we use are freerange and well as organic. So what we are saying is that whats important is that pet food is made from real ingredients that help our pets and is produced in an ethical way, being organic is the icing on the cake. There also was one caller taking about high protein being wrong for pets, the vet who was also on the show pointed out that dogs and cats are meant the have protein however whats important is the type of protein and that protein that mainly comes from a carbohydrate base probably isnt the best.

Let us know your thoughts on this as these are interesting questions.

Raffy is now about to be interviewed by a journalist for a very big paper so we need to dash.

All About Dogs

This week we have been busy getting ready for All About Dogs which is on 10 -1 1 May, its at The Brentwood Centre Showground Brentwood Essex, we would love to see you so please pop down, it should be lots of fun.

This weeks update is going to be short and sweet as the suns just come out and it is a Bank Holiday so Raffy is going to take us all out for a long walk.

St Georges Day went with a bang!

Our St Georges day treats sold out this week, so many of you must have been out there celebrating! As is looks like finally we will start to have some good weather we will shortly we launching our summer treats, we will be able to tell you more about these over the next few weeks....

We mentioned last week that we have recently carried out a survey as well as finding out some startling facts we also found out that many cat owners like to walk their cats,heres a bit more about it...

'OrganiPets has noticed that it’s not just dogs that will be enjoying walkies this summer. Cats, ferrets and even a rabbit have all been spotted on the end of a lead spending some quality time with their owners and getting some important exercise.

When OrganiPets carried out a pet owner survey it found that 17 per cent of cat owners actually walk their pets. Why should dogs have all the fun? To an increasing number of cats the word “walkies” is mewsic to their ears and many will happily don special harnesses and leads before taking to the streets.

Over the past ten years the number of cats in the UK has increased while dogs have decreased in popularity. It is estimated that there are now 10 million cats compared to just 7.3 million dogs [1].

It is thought that changes in lifestyle and structures of households have turned people’s affections towards cats as they are easier pets to look after, especially for those people who have to go out to work all day.

In the same survey OrganiPets found that 100 per cent of respondents believed their pet to be overweight. Getting out on regular walks is essential to a dog’s fitness and wellbeing and is the easiest way to shed any unwanted pounds. If your cat is carrying some extra weight maybe he’d like to get in on the action too!

Teaching your cat to walk on a lead also has the benefits of keeping them away from busy roads, stops them getting into fights with neighbouring cats and helps to avoid unwanted litters.

OrganiPets has compiled a list of useful tips if you want to join in the catwalk craze.

1) Not all cats will enjoy being walked on a lead so do not use force if they are not happy about it. Remember walkies should be fun for everyone so if your cat does not want to walk find a fun alternative activity to do together.

2) Invest in a harness and lead specifically for cats if you are going to start taking your pet out on walks. Don’t just clip a lead to his collar as he could easily slip out of it or choke himself trying.

3) A cat is more likely to enjoy being walked on a lead if you start when he is young. It is not impossible to train an adult cat to walk on a lead but it is likely to be more difficult. Get your cat used to a walking harness by playing with it and rewarding him with a tasty treat at each stage. Gradually get him to wear the harness and slowly increase the amount of time he wears it.

4) Cat harnesses and leads can be very useful for cats that may be recovering from surgery or from an injury. At times like this it is important to keep an eye on your cat to make sure he is not trying to jump fences.

5) If you want to take your cat on holiday or are moving house putting your cat in a walking harness is a sensible way to get him used to new and unfamiliar surroundings. Also if your cat is nervous of new environments he will feel safer being with you if he is happy in his harness.

6) Some owners who have particularly valuable or rare pedigree cats feel happier exercising their pets on a lead if they are worried about them being stolen.'

Natural and Organic Show Olympia London

Its been a full on week this week as we attended the Natural and Organic show at Olympia which was on Sunday and Monday. Its the biggest organic show in Europe and this is our second year of exibiting. We thought that 4 people working on the stand would be enough, well how wrong were we, next year we will have at least 6 people on the stand at all times as we were mobbed! We are still going through all the contacts now but it looks like over 500 retailers have placed orders already, so we are a bit overwhelmed by the hugely positive responce! Many thanks to all of you that poped by to say hello it was great to meet you all.

Raffy didnt join us at the show this year as she prefers to play in the fields, she loves Tony who she stays with when we are at shows,even though shes an old girl she always takes charge of all Tonys young large dogs! We are looking forward to a relaxing weekend as 12 days work with no rest is a long time!

We are very excited here as we have just linked up with a fantastic ethical dog walking/sitting company. We have just signed all the paperwork so we should be able to give you more details about this very soon.

As a bit of fun we carried out a survey recently to find out what we really think of our 4 legged friends. Here are some of our conclusions that are being sent out today to the press

'OrganiPets has noticed a growing trend in women choosing Fur Kids over children, with the UK spending four times the amount on feeding pets than it does babies.

In 2007 alone the UK spent a staggering £1.7 billion on pet food [1] compared to just £392 million on baby food [2].

The Fur Kid phenomenon has been supported by findings from the latest OrganiPets pet owner survey. It found that 100 per cent of pet owners questioned saw their pet as a member of the family and 75 per cent said they preferred the companionship of a pet. Furthermore, 70 per cent of pet owners said their pets offered them love and fulfilment and 34 per cent admitted to confiding in their pet more often than their partner.

As well as giving you unconditional love and unquestioning devotion, Fur Kids will not be embarrassed to be seen with you when they hit adolescence.'

Well how wrong did we get it last week, we were looking forward to lovley long warm Spring walks at the weekend and instead we got snow! Raffy spent a very happy 2 hours running around in it before most people got up!

Sadly the Dandie Dinmont Terrier is now one of the British native breeds whose Puppy Registration numbers have dropped so low as to be classed by the Kennel Club as vulnerable.

What a week ,it feels like Spring has finally arrived, we are looking forward to spending the weekend going for long warm walks at the weekend ( although the forecast seems to be saying its going to get cold again, fingers crossed they are wrong)

We are delighted that we have been approved by PETA who are dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of animals. PETA contacted us as they had heard that we are an ethical company that not only cares about pets but also the welfare of all animals - hence only using freerange organic chicken in our products, to find more about PETA have a look at their website, the section about pet food is under cruelty free food for companion animals.

I mentioned last week that we want to support British Dog Breeds that are in danger of decline, Im delighted to say we are now going to support Dandie Dinmont Terrier breeders. Ill be able to tell you more about this soon, so keep reading.....

Crufts- the aftermath!

Appologies for the dely in updating the blog, the phones havnt stopped since then and we have been overwelmed with your postive responces and orders! However now we are back on top of things and we are keen to let you know about whats been going on!

We sent our first orders to Japan, Norway and Spain this week which we are delighted about and sales in France are doubling week on week!

Very soon we will be able to give you an update on our save British Breeds campaign as well as another campaign we are about to launch with other like minded companies. Keep reading to find out more......

Raffy isnt liking this weather much as its either too cold or too wet for an old lady, however over Easter she took us for a 3 hour walk, not bad when you are 15, I hope Im the same at her age!

Crufts

We are now back in the office after having a full on 4 days at Crufts. It was lovely to chat to you all, we think that we spoke to more than 2000 people, which is fantastic and we sold out of our OrganiPets organic catfood and organic dog treats!

It was great to get home yesterday though as we had really missed Raffy,this is her first day back in the office and as usual she is taking charge of us all, insisting that she is taken out for even more walks than usual!

We had alot of press interest in our campaign to support British dog breeds that are in danger of dying out and we will be able to tell you shortly more about what we are doing to further this cause.

We have also launched our Best Pet competition, the winning dog and cat will be made into the new characters in the Ann Edwards family pet range and the owners will be given all the original artwork. To find out more on how to enter check out our website.

Its going to take us the rest of the week to catch up with all your emails and orders and then we will need to get ready for our next show at Olympia.

We are off to Crufts

We are very excited at OrganiPets as we are about to exibit at our first Crufts. Come and see us in Hall 5 stand 43D. We will be launching our Best Pets competition on Thursday, the winning dog and cat will be made into characters in the international artist Ann Edwards family pet range. The winning owners will get all the original art work, this is a fantastic prize to find out more either come and see us at Crufts or check the website on the 6th March.

The other issue we are raising at Crufts is the plight of British Dog Breeds. Here at OrganiPets we are committed to support a vulnerable native breed breeder or breed rescue. So if you work with British breeds get in touch.

We will be joined at Crufts by world famous dog trainer Claire Guest of Cancer & Bio-detection Dogs with her own vulnerable native breed – Cedar, a Curly-coated Retriever.

The Kennel Club has recently made public a list of native British breeds that are in danger of becoming extinct if their numbers continue to drop. The current fashion for exotic foreign breeds, particularly being owned by celebrities, has meant that traditional British breeds are being ignored. We mustnt let this happen so with your help we hope to raise awareness and get more support for the British breeds.

Anyway we would love to see you at Crufts, the whole team will be there ( plus all our family) so drop by.
